The chimney in the cottage is a free-standing building structure in the form of a vertical duct with smoke and ventilation ducts, designed to discharge fumes from furnaces to the atmosphere and to obtain a natural air draft necessary to maintain the combustion process. Domestic chimneys are usually rectangular in cross-section and constant throughout their height, constituting the superstructure of the walls of buildings (most often internal).
Practical considerations for the construction of shafts with leads are as follows:
o ventilation and smoke ducts should be vertical. In exceptional cases, individual lines may be deviated from the vertical by 30 °, the length of the section deviating from the vertical must not be longer than 2,0 m;
o all cables should be tight, horizontal joints should be completely filled with mortar;
o smoke ducts should be separated from each other with a tight wall made of solid brick, at least thick 12 cm;
o smoke ducts should have cleaning openings provided with a cast-iron door with a cross-section not less than 400 cm2. This opening should be placed below the connection with the conduit of the lowest situated hearth, On the height 5 cm above the floor, in an easily accessible place or in a basement at a height 100-120 cm from the floor;
o external surfaces of shafts in the attic and attics should be plastered;
o the shafts above the roof should be covered with cement-lime plaster from the outside, two-layer, smooth or grouted, when bricks of at least class were used for construction 100 (150), well burned out. Blades with wires should be covered with a cap made of concrete of at least B10 brand, obliterated with cement mortar and isolated from the shaft by laying on two layers of roofing felt;
o to increase the chimney draft, sheet metal attachments can be used;
o the distance of the construction timber from the chimney flues must be at least 25 cm;
o the dimensions of the flue pipes are:
– for one stove 14 x 14 cm,
– for two ovens while burning 14 x 21 cm do 14 x 27 cm,
– a separate channel for each kitchen 14 x 21 cm do 14 x 27 cm,
– for each ventilation duct 14 x 14 cm;
o the channels inside the chimney should be smooth, with carefully blurred joints;
and chimneys are made of solid ceramic bricks, minimum class 100 on cement-lime mortar Rz 30 with a volumetric composition 1 part of the cement: 1 part of hydrated lime:1 part of the sand.
