Well fixed steps (saddle construction)

Well-built stairs are well-attached steps (saddle construction).

Like on the teeth of a saw, the entrance steps are placed on the cutouts in the side supports of the cheeks. The design of the saddle step supports is so clear, that is self-explanatory for a skilled person. However, the home-made craftsman must remember, that building without rules and rules is an excuse.

Especially the cutouts in the cheekbones of the stairs, which serve as supports for the steps, must be carefully measured. In this case, the use of thick logs turns out to be less important, however, the most important thing is their width and the characteristic form of toothed notches. After cutting the teeth in the cheeks, we must leave the width intact (minimum 16 cm), which will ensure the proper strength of the structure. The steps to be applied must be well measured and perfectly flat, and then carefully nailed, with screws or dowels, so that there is no fear, that the stairs will creak or creak over time. A special form of saddle stairs is such a construction, in which one toothed support is used. Therefore, the support must be twice the thickness of the stringers. This complicates the mounting of the steps a bit, which is attached centrally to the slot of the cutout in the bearing spar. Without additional reinforcement of the support of the step with a double-sided wedge made of wood or a steel angle, they would tilt during use.
